Stroll around Bendigo's best open garden and enjoy the beauty of over 200 roses plus lavenders, budelias and more.

All overlooking the tranquil Campaspe river.

Interact with farm animals. Goats, sheep, chickens and guinea fowl.

Enjoy tea, coffee and scones on the lawn surrounded by flower gardens.

Gates open 10:00am and close at 4:00pm. Cost of admission is $8 for adults. Children Free.

Gardens are open most weekends from late October to Mothers Day in May. Gardens are closed in February due to heat.

River Gardens Axedale B&B farm stay and rose gardens can be found at 91 Brownes Lane, Axedale.

Situated in the beautiful Campaspe River wine district halfway between Bendigo and Heathcote in central Victoria.

Things to do:

  • Explore 133 acres of farmland.
  • Wander the gardens and enjoy the colours and perfume of over 200 roses.
  • Collect farm fresh eggs and feed the sheep, goats and alpaca's.
  • Fish the Campaspe river for cod, golden perch and redfin. Depth averages from one to five metres.
  • Catch yabbies in the creek.
  • Ride the O'keefe Rail Trail to Bendigo or Heathcote. The rail trail is only 900 metres from the River Gardens front gate.
  • Play a round of golf beside the Campaspe river at the pretty but challenging Axedale Golf Course. Visitors are welcome.

Special events:

  • Elmore Field Days. Held in October each year the field days are well worth a visit. Allow a full day to see most of it.
  • Bendigo Swap Meet. This is a huge event held in mid November each year. See over 1,700 sites mainly involving car restoration. Engine parts, car parts, tools and auto memorabilia.
  • Heathcote Wine and Food Festival. An extraordinary event for foodies. Sample foods and wines from over forty local growers. Held in early October each year.
  • Heathcote on Show. Held on the Queens Birthday weekend each year. See and learn everything there is to know about Heathcote foods and wines.
  • Bendigo Easter Fair. Watch the torchlight procession Saturday night and the huge Sunday procession to see the most Chinese dragons imaginable.
  • Australian Wool and Sheep Show. Held in July each year at the Bendigo Showgrounds.

  • Axedale and Heathcote wineries. Visit dozens of wineries and cellar doors in the renowned Heathcote wine region.
  • Lake Eppalock. Ideal for fishing, swimming and boating. 
  • Pink Cliffs at Heathcote. Very pretty sand formations. Easy walking track.
  • Valley of Liquid Ambers at Heathcote. Amazing Autumn colours. Nice picnic spot.
  • Bendigo Pottery. Visit the oldest working pottery in Australia.
  • Golden Dragon Museum Bendigo - home to the longest Imperial Chinese Dragon in the world.
  • Central Deborah Gold Mine. Go deep underground to experience life in the mines. Dine at the underground restaurant.
  • Sunday Market. Visit the Bendigo Showgrounds prior to 2:00pm on Sundays to experience a huge market. Admission is free.
  • Heathcote Bush Market - First Saturday every month. Arts, crafts and foods. Well worth a visit. Admission is free.

  • Hotels, Pubs and Bistros of Bendigo and Heathcote - only a 20 minute drive from River Gardens.
  • Redesdale Hotel - only a 25 minute drive from River Gardens.

Axedale Accommodation

There is no motel accommodation in Axedale. The only local accommodation available is in one of excellent farm stay bed and breakfasts.

Alternatively you may stay at the Heathcote Retreat Motel which is a 20 minute drive to the south east in central Heathcote.

Lake Eppalock Caravan Parks

Caravan Park accommodation is available on the shores of Lake Eppalock.

Lake Eppalock is approximately a 15 minute drive south of Axedale.

Accommodation is available at the Lake Eppalock Holiday Park, Metcalfe Pool Holiday Park, Lakeshore Caravan Park and Moorabee Lodge Caravan Park.

About Us

River Gardens Axedale is a family owned and operated sheep and cropping farm on the banks of the Campaspe river in central Victoria. Luxury B&B accommodation is available on the property.

Accommodation was purpose built and opened in 2015 as a Bendigo and Heathcote B&B Farm Stay. River Gardens Axedale is just minutes from local wineries, cellar doors and vineyards.

Rose Gardens were opened to the public in April, 2019. Gardens are open most weekends from late October to early May. Gardens are closed in February due to heat.
